🎯 Measurement

How to track how many clicks a link gets

The right method depends on where you publish the link and what you need to know. You can measure outbound clicks on your own site. Tracking campaigns, sessions, and conversions requires UTMs and analytics, while channel and offline comparisons require a tracked short link.

You cannot reconstruct historical clicks that were never measured or access someone else's private analytics. You can start measuring an external link from any point you control, such as a button on your website that leads to a supplier, social network, or WhatsApp.

Choose the data you actually need

Data pointWhat it countsRight tool
Outbound clickA click on a link inside a website you control.GA4 Enhanced Measurement or Google Tag Manager.
RedirectEvery request that passes through a short link.A link shortener with analytics.
SessionThe visit after the destination loads and its analytics code runs.UTM parameters plus GA4 or another web analytics tool.
ConversionThe final action: purchase, registration, form submission, or message sent.An analytics, ecommerce, or CRM event.

These figures are not interchangeable. An outbound click happens at the source, a redirect at the short link, a session when the destination opens, and a conversion later in the journey. Decide which one answers your question before comparing dashboards.

  1. 1

If it is on your website

Enable GA4 Enhanced Measurement and verify the click event for outbound links. Keep link_url and link_domain so you can identify which link was clicked.

  2. 2

If it leads to your website

Add UTM parameters to the destination and measure sessions and conversions in Analytics. This works even when the link is on an external platform, provided you can edit it.

  3. 3

If it is in a bio, email, PDF, or editable campaign

Replace it with a different short link for every channel. You will count redirects from that point onward, but you cannot recover data from the earlier period.

Generate the link below and save it to your account to start recording clicks. Use one version for your bio, another for email, and another for the QR code so you can compare placements instead of mixing them into one total.

What the Free plan includes

A Free account shows seven days of metrics and allows up to 100 clicks per month. After that, visitors pass through an intermediate page with advertising. The destination cannot be edited on Free; that feature requires Basic or Premium.

Why clicks and sessions do not match

There is no fixed relationship between the two. Bots, previews, scanners, double-clicks, and exits before loading can raise redirect counts. Consent choices, blockers, and loading errors can reduce observed sessions. Multiple later sessions may also be attributed to one campaign, and time zones or reporting windows may differ.

The gap alone does not prove that your site is slow or that a tool is wrong. Compare the same period and time zone, review automated traffic, and only then investigate performance, consent, or tagging.

How to read the numbers without misleading yourself

  • Choose a reporting window that suits the channel in advance, and use that same window for every variant.
  • Compare campaigns with similar audiences, offers, and distribution. An isolated total does not tell you whether performance was good.
  • Do not treat each redirect as a person: taap.at records requests, and one person may open the link several times.
  • Compare opens with the final action. A click shows interest; it does not confirm a message, registration, or sale.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see the clicks on a link shared by someone else?

You cannot access their private analytics or recover past data. If the link appears on your website, you can start measuring outbound clicks now with GA4 or Tag Manager.

What is the difference between clicks and sessions?

A click or redirect happens before the destination opens; a session appears after the page loads and runs its analytics. Bots, previews, consent, blockers, loading, and different windows prevent the figures from matching.

Is the click counter real-time?

The open is recorded during the redirect and normally appears in the dashboard right away. Do not interpret it as a unique person or a confirmed conversion.

Does it count when the same person clicks twice?

Yes, both opens are recorded. To estimate users or sessions, check the destination's analytics and review how each tool deduplicates activity.
