Link shortener with analytics: what to check before choosing one
Any shortener can make a link smaller. What sets them apart is the data you get after someone clicks. This guide covers the metrics that matter, the ones that add little value, and how to start measuring today.

On this page
A basic shortener only trims the URL. One with analytics also tells you whether your post worked, where your audience is, and which devices people used to open it. You do not need to pay for the essential metrics.
The five metrics that actually matter
| Metric | Question it answers | Decision it supports |
|---|---|---|
| Total clicks | Did anyone open it? | Stop using that channel or invest more in it. |
| Clicks over time | When did people open it? | Choose the day and time of your next post. |
| Country / city | Where did people open it? | Choose language, currency, and service hours. |
| Device | Mobile or desktop? | Prioritize the mobile design of the destination page. |
| Source (referrer) | Which platform sent the visit? | Identify the channels that work and the ones that do not. |
Total clicks, unique visitors, and sessions are different metrics
A total click counts interactions; a unique visitor attempts to deduplicate people or devices; a session belongs to the destination's analytics. “Unique” depends on the deduplication method, so only compare metrics that use the same definition.
Try a tracked link now
Create a short link below. It works without an account but does not collect metrics. Once you claim it in your account, it starts recording the country, device, and source for each click.
What the Free plan includes
Links in a Free account display metrics from the past seven days and allow up to 100 clicks per month before visitors are shown an intermediate page with advertising. You cannot edit the destination after creating the link; that feature is available on Basic and Premium.
Shortener clicks, GA4 sessions, and UTM parameters
These tools do not compete; they measure different points in the journey. The shortener records the click. GA4 records activity after the destination loads and its measurement code runs. The numbers do not have to match because of repeat clicks, exits before loading, consent restrictions, or later visits attributed to the same campaign.
- Use the shortener to compare channels and creative variants with one another.
- Use Analytics for what happens on the site: what visitors read and what they buy.
- Add UTM parameters to the destination if you want both tools to speak the same language.
Use one link per channel for better data
Instead of pasting the same link everywhere, create one for each channel and point them all to the same destination. It takes two minutes and replaces one unhelpful overall total with a clear comparison.
- 1
Create one link per channel
Make one for email, one for your bio, one for Stories, and one for WhatsApp. Send all of them to the same destination.
- 2
Name links by channel, not campaign
“July newsletter” quickly becomes outdated. “Newsletter” remains useful every month.
- 3
Use the same measurement window for all of them
Decide in advance how long you will measure, then compare every channel across that same window. The right period depends on the campaign length and your publishing cadence.
A/B testing: one link, two destinations
If your plan includes it, one short link can split traffic between two destination pages according to weights you set. This lets you test two landing pages, prices, or messages without changing your site or publishing two different links.
Frequently asked questions
Are there free link shorteners with analytics?
Yes. On taap.at, the Free plan includes clicks over time, country, and device data within a seven-day window. Basic expands the window to 30 days, while Premium retains the full history.
Do link analytics count bots?
Social networks and apps may open a link to create a preview, and those requests can be mixed with human clicks if they are not filtered. Compare channels using the same methodology, and do not treat every click as a different person.
Can I see analytics for a link I created without an account?
No. Anonymous links intentionally do not record clicks. If you create an account, the link generated on this page moves into your dashboard and begins collecting data from then on.
Do you store the IP address of someone who clicks?
The IP address is used at the time of the click to infer the country, then it is not retained in connection with that click. The stored data is the country, device type, and source.
