How to add WhatsApp to Instagram: button, bio, and Stories
You can connect WhatsApp Business to display a Click to WhatsApp button, or publish a link on your profile and in Stories. The best option depends on your account type, the message you want to pre-fill, and how much tracking you need.

You do not need to post your number as plain text in your bio. A clickable button or link saves visitors from copying the number and adding you as a contact. Before choosing an option, separate three outcomes: opening WhatsApp, confirming that a message was sent, and attributing an inquiry or sale. No single option proves all three on its own.
Option 1: connect the native WhatsApp button
The official process starts in the WhatsApp Business app. You need a professional Instagram account, either Business or Creator, a WhatsApp Business account, and recent versions of both apps. Connecting them enables the Click to WhatsApp button on your profile.
- 1
Open WhatsApp Business
From Tools, open Facebook & Instagram. The exact name or location may vary by operating system and version.
- 2
Choose Instagram
Tap Continue and sign in to the correct account. If it is still a personal account, the process lets you switch it to Business or Creator.
- 3
Confirm and return to WhatsApp
Review the account, tap Add, and return to WhatsApp Business. The connected account should appear on the Facebook & Instagram screen.
- 4
Test the profile as a visitor
Open Instagram from another account and check that the button shows the right business account and opens the correct number.
If the button does not appear
Update both apps and check that the number is connected to WhatsApp Business. The connection may also fail if the business category does not comply with the WhatsApp Commerce Policy or if permissions are pending in Business Manager.
Option 2: add a WhatsApp link to your profile
A wa.me link works without connecting the accounts and can include a message written in the visitor's voice, such as: "Hi, I found you on Instagram and would like to ask about..." You can also use a dedicated short link to separate profile opens from other channels.
- 1
Build the link
Use the complete number with country code and without +, spaces, or hyphens. Add a short message the person can complete.
- 2
Create a trackable version if needed
The shortener simplifies the URL and counts opens. Do not treat them as conversations: someone can open WhatsApp without sending anything.
- 3
Paste it under Edit profile → Links
Add it to the Links section, not as plain text in your bio. Give it a clear title, such as "Ask on WhatsApp."
- 4
Test it while signed out
Open the profile from another account, tap the link, and verify the number, message, and full user flow.
Limits of tracked links on Free
Free shows seven days of metrics and allows 100 clicks per month. After that, an ad-supported interstitial page appears. The destination cannot be edited on Free. For a permanent profile link, consider that extra page before replacing wa.me.
Option 3: use the link sticker in Stories
Create a Story, open Stickers, choose Link, and paste the WhatsApp URL. Customize the sticker text to describe the action, such as "Check availability," and test it before publishing. The Story lasts 24 hours unless you save it to Highlights. The link should match the specific promise made in that Story.
Which option should you use?
| Option | Requirement | Benefit | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native button | Professional Instagram + WhatsApp Business | Visible contact option without using up a link. | Connecting the accounts does not fully attribute an inquiry or sale. |
| Profile link | A WhatsApp URL | Pre-filled message and a trackable version. | An open does not confirm that the message was sent. |
| Story sticker | A Story with the Link sticker available | A contextual CTA for an offer or piece of content. | Lasts 24 hours unless added to Highlights. |
No single setup works best in every case. The button removes steps, the link gives you control over the message and attribution, and a Story adds context. Start with the simplest option that meets your goal, then add another only if you can measure what it contributes.
How to track results without counting clicks as inquiries
- Create a different link for the profile and Stories if you want to compare opens.
- Use different messages, such as "I found you on your profile" and "I saw your Story," knowing the person can edit them.
- Record received messages with a consistent label in WhatsApp Business or your CRM.
- Connect the sale to that conversation using a defined attribution rule; do not infer it from the click.
- Review opens, messages, opportunities, and sales as separate stages after 14 and 28 days.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a business account to add WhatsApp to Instagram?
The Click to WhatsApp button requires a professional Instagram account, either Business or Creator, and WhatsApp Business. You do not need to connect the two accounts to publish a WhatsApp URL under Links.
How do I connect WhatsApp Business to Instagram?
In WhatsApp Business, open Tools → Facebook & Instagram, choose Instagram, sign in, and confirm the account. The path may vary between versions, so keep both apps updated.
Can I add a pre-filled message?
Yes, if you use a wa.me link with text on your profile or in a Story. The message appears in the text field, but the person can edit or delete it before sending.
Why doesn't the WhatsApp button appear?
Check that the Instagram account is professional, the number is active in WhatsApp Business, and both apps are up to date. Some business categories or permission problems in Business Manager can also prevent the connection.
How can I tell how many inquiries come from Instagram?
A separate link for each placement counts opens, not inquiries. To measure the funnel, distinguish the profile from Stories, confirm received messages with a label or CRM, and connect sales using a consistent rule.
